Welcome to The Yard Report with Henry Hiller
This blog is focused on outdoor home improvement and the smaller details that can completely change the appearance of a property. I’ve always found it interesting how projects like fresh mulch, landscape edging, trimming bushes, planting flowers, and cleaning up overgrown areas can make a home look more maintained and put together without needing a massive renovation. A lot of people think home improvement only means expensive construction projects, but honestly some of the biggest transformations come from simple landscaping upgrades and regular maintenance.
In this blog I’ll talk about curb appeal, mulch types and colors, seasonal yard projects, etc. Whether you’re interested in landscaping or just looking for ideas to improve your property, hopefully you’ll find something useful here.
Why Mulch Makes a Big Difference
A lot of people think landscaping means huge projects and spending a ton of money, but honestly something as simple as fresh mulch can completely change how a house looks. It’s one of those things where you don’t always notice it when it looks good, but you definitely notice when it’s old and faded. Fresh mulch just makes everything look cleaner and more taken care of right away.
One thing I notice a lot is how old mulch can make a yard look kind of dull even when the grass is cut and the

landscaping itself is nice. Then once new mulch is put down, the plants and flowers stand out way more and the whole property just feels newer. Black mulch usually gives more of a clean modern look while brown mulch blends in a little more naturally, but honestly both can look really good depending on the house.
Mulch also helps with more than just appearance. It helps stop weeds from growing everywhere and helps the soil hold water better during hot weather. That’s one of the reasons so many people redo their mulch in the spring. It keeps the landscaping looking fresh while also helping the plants stay healthy during the summer.
Another thing I like about mulch is that you can usually notice the
difference immediately. A house can look pretty average before, but once the beds are edged out and fresh mulch is installed, everything just looks way more clean and put together. It makes the landscaping stand out more and gives the house better curb appeal without having to spend a crazy amount of money.
I also think mulch is one of the better outdoor projects because it doesn’t take months to finish. In most cases it can be done in a day, but it still makes a huge difference. It’s a simple project, but honestly it can completely change the overall look of a property.

Should You Mow Your Own Lawn or Hire Someone?

A lot of people think mowing the lawn is easy until they actually have to keep up with it every week. During the summer the grass grows really fast, especially after rain, so if you miss a week the yard can start looking messy pretty quickly. And honestly when the lawn looks bad, it makes the house look bad too.
One thing I’ve noticed is that mowing is more than just cutting the grass. The trimming, edging, and cleanup after is what really makes the yard look clean. You can mow the lawn perfectly, but if there’s grass all over the driveway and messy edges around the sidewalk, it still won’t look finished. The small details really make the biggest difference.

The equipment part is another thing people don’t always think about. Mower blades need to stay sharp so the grass gets cut clean. There’s also oil changes, gas, air filters, and fixing stuff when it breaks. If the blades get dull, the lawn can start looking uneven even after mowing. A lot of people don’t realize how much maintenance lawn equipment actually needs.
At the same time, I get why people like mowing their own lawn. It’s nice seeing the yard look clean after everything is done. But I also understand why people hire someone because it definitely takes time every week. Either way though, keeping up with the lawn makes a huge difference in how a property looks and is one of the easiest ways to improve curb appeal.
Is It Worth Doing Home Improvements Before Selling Your House?
One question a lot of homeowners have is whether it’s worth doing home improvements before selling their house. Honestly, I think it depends on what you’re doing. Some projects can make a big difference, while others cost a lot and don’t really add much value. Most of the time, you don’t need a huge renovation. You just want the house to look clean, maintained, and ready for the next owner.

One thing I’ve noticed is that buyers pay attention to the little things. If the paint is chipped, things are broken, or the yard looks messy, people start wondering what else hasn’t been taken care of. Also, when a house looks clean and well maintained, it automatically gives a better impression.
A lot of the best improvements are actually pretty simple. Fresh paint, updated lights, and fixing small things around the house can make a lot bigger difference than people think. Even just cleaning and organizing can make a home feel more inviting when people visit.
The outside matters too. The front yard is the first thing buyers see, so the first impression is important. A clean lawn, fresh mulch, and no weeds can make the whole property feel more welcoming before anyone even steps inside.
At the end of the day, I think it’s 100% better to focus on smaller improvements instead of spending a ton of money on a major project. Buyers want a house that feels cared for and move in ready. I think the simple things end up making the biggest difference.
